Entrance Exam

Entrance examinations are conducted annually between the months of June and September, providing students with a designated timeframe to demonstrate their abilities and knowledge. It is essential to highlight that any examination results received after September will be deferred, requiring candidates to await the subsequent year for their results to be processed and evaluated.

The entrance examinations will be evaluated, and the results will be forwarded to the Vocations Director. The Vocations Director will subsequently reach out to inform you of your eligibility to enter the program at St. Fidelis Seminary.

If you did not successfully pass the entrance examination, you may reapply for the subsequent academic year. Furthermore, you are encouraged to consult your vocational director for access to previous examinations along with their corresponding answers for preparation purposes. Diligence and consistent practice will significantly contribute to achieving success in your endeavors.

Enrolment

It is imperative that the vocations director submits a final list of students who will be admitted for the upcoming academic year by the end of December. This is crucial to facilitate the admission of candidates in the standby category. The maximum intake permitted is 40 students.

Selection will primarily be based on academic grades, followed by the number of candidates associated with each sponsor, and then on the overall evaluation of the entrance examination, which includes an assessment of the candidate's personal history.

Although it is possible to successfully pass the entrance examination, limited space availability may necessitate placing certain candidates in the standby category. Students should remind their vocations director to confirm their inclusion on the admission list before the end of December.  Failure of the vocations director to verify the number of students entering the upcoming academic year may result in the denial of admission for some applicants.

Before Arrival
  • Please ensure that you bring your medical book to the seminary. Failure to do so will incur a fee of 10 kina for the procurement of a replacement medical book. The rector will conduct a review of each medical book to verify the status of your health.
  • It is imperative to bring warm cotton clothing, as the climate in Madang is warm, and cotton garments are recommended for health considerations. The use of synthetic materials may adversely affect your well-being.
  • Appropriate attire is required while at St. Fidelis. This includes dress pants, collared shirts devoid of any writing, and short-sleeve shirts that do not display advertisements for alcohol or any inappropriate graphics. Due to the prevalent humid and warm conditions, it is advisable to pack pure cotton pants and shirts. It has been noted that many seminarians from the Highlands have experienced skin irritations from wearing nylon clothing. Therefore, please refrain from bringing synthetic garments. Beginning in 2024, each seminarian will be required to wear black dress pants, white collared shirts, and either black or brown shoes for major events and Sundays.
  • Additionally, it is recommended that you bring an umbrella or raincoat and a flashlight for illumination.
  • Candidates' families should provide adequate financial resources to cover travel expenses for term breaks or to purchase essential personal items, such as shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and razors. The seminary will supply soap, laundry detergent (OMO), and toilet paper biweekly at no cost to the seminarian. These items are not to be exchanged for any reason, as such actions will lead to dismissal from the seminary. Please note that the seminary will not provide pillows for hygiene purposes; however, sheets, mattresses, kitchenware, and mosquito nets will be supplied free of charge to the seminarian. The seminary does not assume responsibility for travel arrangements to and from the institution. Should a seminarian be dismissed, the sponsor will be responsible for making the necessary arrangements for their departure.
  • The seminary will not provide NID cards, nor will it allocate time or resources to assist with this matter.
  • Please ensure that your contact information is shared with your family. In the unfortunate event of the death of an immediate family member (father, mother, or sibling), the seminarian will be granted a two-week leave of absence to attend the haus krai and burial. Notification of such circumstances must be transmitted solely through the bishop or the vocation director to the rector, and it is expected that the sponsor will cover the associated travel costs.

Preparation before arrival

St. Fidelis enforces a prohibition on smoking and the chewing of betel nuts. It is highly recommended that individuals gradually reduce these habits prior to their arrival. We uphold strict disciplinary measures to facilitate the cessation of addictive behaviors. The bishops of Papua New Guinea collectively advise that seminarians and future priests abandon these habits to concentrate fully on their formation.
